To honor the upcoming Shafer wine dinner collaboration with C’est Si Bon I would like to extol a few of this wineries amazing traits and accolades with everyone and anyone who may not be familiar with them. Shafer is just really, really cool. For starters in December 2004 they made the switch to 100% solar power and actually generate so much of it that they send the excess to the electric company…huh? They aren’t really that into pesticides either, so they let bugs kill the bugs that bug them…ya, I did it. They also build tons of song bird houses to attract cavity dwelling birds; swallows and bluebirds, which thrive on vine decimating creepy crawlers, while barn owls and American Kestrels keep moles and gophers in check. If you were ever wondering about “Red Shoulder Ranch” Chardonnay, it is in honor of the hawk which bears the name. The winery team also re-uses and recycles its own water and uses its own compost for fertilizer. All of these methods impress and please, but what about the wine, you query? It’s, oh I don’t know, sort of remarkable, totally cult crazed, crème de la crème. Elixir of life, comes to mind. Even the sleek silver and black label says “I am better than you” (to its neighboring bottle of something pedestrian, not you, gentle reader). All of their wines are distinct and elegant to the point of distraction. I am looking forward to the Rack of Lamb paired with the ever peerless and “Relentless” Syrah, ’05. This vintage has been enlivened with a modest splash of Petite Sirah which the San Francisco Chronicle says “contributes mightily to this wines depth, richness and full body, showing dark fruit, blueberry, roasted nuts and licorice”. Yummy. We will also be pouring their Merlot and “One Point Five “Stags Leap District” Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a return to the family roots, literally, planted in the 70’s. “A Stags Leap Cabernet was our first wine made back in 1978,” says Doug Shafer, President of Shafer Vineyards. If is ain’t broke, don’t fix it, Doug. Tickets are going to scream out the door so get ‘em while you can! See on the first of May with our French friends! Au Revoir, Joel
